Gooch & Housego’s 52-X67 fused pure silica, 52-X65 visible wavelength RGB and 53-X89 series of broadband, fiber-based, polarization maintaining (PM), 1x2 and 2x2 fiber optic couplers, taps and optical signal splitters offer high extinction ratio (ER) with minimum optical loss and polarization launch into a single or dual axis (slow axis and fast axis).

Gooch & Housego (G&H) utilizes a proprietary, proven fused biconical taper (FBT) process to manufacture high grade PM couplers including single wavelength and wavelength flattened (broadband/wideband). G&H selects PM fibers such as Panda and bow-tie from different suppliers to accommodate your application-specific operating wavelengths.

Fused PM couplers usually operate over a certain wavelength band of ±20 nm. G&H’s latest innovative FBT wavelength flattening technology has expanded the operating wavelength band up to 50 nm, with performance comparable to G&H’s single mode (SM) WFCs (wavelength flattened couplers).

Available in several mechanical package options with multiple connector options like FC/PC, FC/APC etc., 52-X6X PM fiber couplers provide operating wavelengths from 400 nm to 680 nm, and coupling ratio offerings range from 50/50, 20/80, 10/90, 5/95 and 1/99 etc. Other coupling ratio options are available upon request.

G&H’s 53-X89 fused broadband PM couplers are small in size and exhibit a flat coupling ratio response over a broadband of wavelength ranges. Splitters are available in a variety of coupling/splitting ratios.

G&H’s FPM-X series of fused PM axis-matched low ratio tap fiber couplers enable low-power monitoring of a PM signal path, and the FPU-X series of fused PM low ratio tap couplers tap off low power from a signal path whilst maintaining polarization through the component. Proprietary PM manufacturing technology provides tap ratios as low as 0.01% with low loss and high signal path polarization extinction ratio. FPU-X PM low ratio tap couplers also exhibit improved tap ratio stability when input polarization extinction ratio levels are low or fluctuating.

Fused PM axis-matched low ratio tap fiber couplers exhibit outstanding tap ratio stability even when system polarization extinction ratio levels are low or fluctuating. The all-fiber construction and excellent loss characteristics provide exceptional reliability at high power as well as wide temperature range operation with temperature dependent loss (TDL) typically <0.002 dB/°C for the tap path.

FPM-X and FPU-X series high-performance parts are available at a range of wavelengths with different fiber options and can therefore be readily specified in a wide variety of applications, enabling rapid design cycles and new project builds. Standard parts are available at wavelengths from 900 to 1600 nm. For other wavelengths or coupling ratios please contact AMS Technologies.

Gooch & Housego’s FFP-X series of polarization maintaining (PM) couplers and combiners enable either the accurate monitoring and splitting of optical signals in polarization maintaining fiber or the efficient combination of two orthogonally polarized sources of light such that they are output through the same, single fiber output.

FFP-X PM Fiber Couplers:
Manufactured using industry-standard PM fiber, FFP-X PM fiber couplers are available in any coupling ratio from 1% to 50% with a wide variety of connector options. Based on G&H’s fused fiber technology, the FFP-X PM fiber couplers demonstrate very low loss, high polarization extinction ratio, high power handling and there is no price penalty for adding a second input port.

The center operating wavelength may be chosen from within a wide variety of operating passbands, including 780, 820, 980, 1064, 1310, 14xx, 15xx and 16xx nm, but also the 2 µm range (1900 to 2199 nm). In common with all PM components, it is necessary to launch into either the slow or the fast axis to maintain polarization. For the Gooch & Housego (G&H) PM couplers, specifications are based on slow axis launch, although fast axis versions are also available if requested.

FFP-X PM Fiber Combiners:
The G&H FFP-X PM fiber combiners enable the efficient combination of two orthogonally polarized sources of light such that they are output through the same, single fiber output. In optical amplifiers this provides a doubling of pump power whilst ensuring pump redundancy should a pump failure occur. Applications include high power optical amplifiers and undersea systems. All ports consist of polarization maintaining fiber.

Gooch & Housego’s FPB-X series of fused PM bow tie couplers enable the accurate monitoring and splitting of optical signals in polarization maintaining (PM) fiber. Manufactured using PM bow tie fiber, the FPB-X PM couplers are available in any coupling ratio from 1 to 50%.

Based on Gooch &Housego’s (G&H) fused fiber technology, the FPB-X PM bow tie couplers demonstrate very low loss, high power handling and there is no price penalty for adding a second input port. The center operating wavelength may be chosen from within the 1 μm operating passband, other operating passbands are available dependent on fiber availability.

In common with all PM components, it is necessary to launch into either the slow or the fast axis to maintain polarization. For the G&H PM FPB-X series bow tie couplers, specifications are based on slow axis launch, although fast axis versions are also available if requested.

NOTE: Other component types including ultra-low ratio taps (ULRT) and wavelength division multiplexers (WDM) are available on request, please contact AMS Technologies with your specific requirements.

Light launched in the single mode core of the input single mode (SM) fiber or dual-clad (DC) fiber will transmit 100% through G&H’s 18-XXXXX-XX-XXXXX series FDCF coupler directly to the inner core of the output DC fiber, while light launched in the inner cladding of the DC fiber will couple to the multi mode (MM) fiber with at least 50% coupling efficiency depending on the core size of the MM fiber as a bigger MM fiber (i.e. 250 µm core) results in a higher coupling transmission percentage (70% or higher) to the MM fiber. As different DC fibers have different operating wavelength ranges, proper choice of SM fiber is very important for building a high-performance FDCF coupler. The typical 2x2 FDCF couplers have DC fiber in two opposite leads and MM fiber in the other two arms. The DC input fiber can be optionally replaced with a matching SM fiber and the MM output fiber can be terminated to form a 2x1 FDCF coupler. Beamsplitters & Combiners
PM or SM Splitters/Combiners; 1550 nm, Other; Splitting Ratio 50/50-90/10; PDL ±0.25 dB; Directivity >50 dB OZ Optics’ fiber optic beamsplitters are used to divide light from one fiber into two or more fibers. Light from an input fiber is first collimated, then sent through a beam-splitting optic to divide it into two. The resultant output beams are then focused back into the output fibers. Both 1xN and 2xN splitters can be constructed in this fashion with as many as eight or more outputs, with both low return losses and low insertion losses. Standard parts available in this series are FOBS-12P (1x2) and FOBS-22P (2x2) pigtail-style splitters, FOBS-12 (1x2) and FOBS-22 (2x2) receptacle-style splitters, as well as LDBS-12P (pigtail-style) and LDBS-1 (receptacle-style) laser diode to fiber splitters, and finally ULBS-12P (pigtail-style) and ULBS-1 (receptacle-style) laser to fiber splitters This design is extremely flexible, allowing to use different fiber types on different ports, and different beamsplitter optics inside. Custom designs combining circulators, polarizing splitters and non-polarizing splitters in the same package are routinely manufactured. Splitters can be made with either fibers permanently attached to each port (pigtail style) or with receptacles on each port that one can plug your fiber into (receptacle style). OZ Optics can also build source to fiber couplers with built-in beamsplitters for either laser or laser diode sources. Contact AMS Technologies for details. If size is a concern, we recommend that you consider OZ Optics’ miniature line of splitters. Within OZ Optics’ series of beamsplitters and combiners, the two most common types of splitters offered are polarizing beamsplitters and polarization maintaining (PM) beamsplitters. Polarizing beamsplitters split incoming light into two orthogonal states. They can also be used to combine the light from two fibers into a single output fiber. When used as a beam combiner, each input signal will transmit along a different output polarization axis. PM splitters use a partially reflecting mirror to transmit a portion of the light from the input fiber to the main output fiber and reflect the remainder of the light to the second output fiber. All ports made using polarization maintaining fiber are aligned so that polarized light aligned parallel to the stress rods on the input fiber emerges from the output fibers in the same manner, maintaining the polarization state to a high degree. Splitters that only split off a small portion of the input light are commonly known as taps and often used for power monitoring applications. For a very cost-effective alternative configuration, combining the functions of a tap and monitor photodiode in a single unit, we invite you to review OZ Optics’ OPM series of inline optical taps and monitors. FFS-X SM Fiber Couplers
Fused; Fiber Type SM; 450-1599 nm; Number of Legs 1x2, 2x2; Splitting Ratio 1/99,999-50/50, Other; Fiber Length 0.5, 1 m; RL ≥50 dB; Dimensions Ø3.0x50/60, Ø5.0x75, 80x10x8, 5x5x85 mm Gooch & Housego’s FFS-X series of single mode (SM) fiber couplers split or combine light in the visible or (near) infrared regions. The couplers utilize Gooch & Housego’s (G&H) low-loss fused fiber technology. No light leaves the fiber, therefore no alignment is required and there are no unwanted reflections. Furthermore, the output fiber pigtails may be directly integrated into beam delivery systems. Visible Wavelength SM Fiber Couplers:Within the FFS-xxxxxxxxx series of visible wavelength fiber couplers, versions optimized for any wavelength within the range of 450 to 700 nm may be selected. These couplers are designed for applications in display systems, sensors and biomedical equipment. Near Infrared SM Fiber Couplers:G&H’s FFS-xxxxxxxxx series of near infrared couplers splits light at any selected wavelength from 700 to 1199 nm. These couplers are designed for applications in fiber laser, sensor and avionics applications. Ultra-low Ratio Tap SM Fiber Couplers:G&H’s FFS-xxxxxxAxx series of ultra-low ratio tap couplers splits a very small amount of light from a signal path to a tap port. Suitable for very high optical power, its main application is in the monitoring of optical sources such as fiber lasers. Low tap ratios such as 0.1%, 0.01% or 0.001% enable the monitoring photodetector to operate without damage or saturation. Gooch & Housego proprietary manufacturing technology provides ultra-low loss in the signal path, thereby maximizing optical power handling. Consistently high return loss (>55 dB) reduces the amount of optical power reflected back along the input fiber. This helps the fiber laser operate in a stable manner.
