Product Portfolio
AMS Technologies carries a broad range of fiber optic filters, including fixed as well as manually, motor/MEMS driven or digital tunable filters.
Within the series of fixed fiber optic filters, light from the input fiber is first collimated and passed through the filter with a pre-specified, fixed wavelength band. Various filter characteristics are available. The beam is then focused into the output fiber.
A series of manually adjustable polarization insensitive tunable fiber optic filters is available, consisting of a collimating optical assembly, a rotating stage that allows for manual adjustment of the angle of incidence between the filter and the incident beam, thus controlling the narrow bandpass wavelength at which the filter transmits, and a focusing optical assembly to collect the light again.
This filter technology also is at the heart of our series of motor driven tunable fiber optic filters, pigtailed units that are pre-calibrated such that the user directly enters the wavelength to transmit via a computer interface which has options for different communication standards.
Our adjustable tunable filters are also available as variable bandwidth versions that allow both the wavelength and bandwidth of the filter to be controlled by the user – either manually with two separate adjustment knobs or motor-driven and controlled through an electrical interface.
For laboratory environments, product development or automated testing, we carry a series of digital tunable fiber optic filters – handheld units with a keypad, display and computer interface, allowing the user to directly enter the wavelength to transmit via the keypad or remotely, through the computer interface (USB interface with cable is standard).
A series of fiber optic filters based on MEMS technology is also available. Incoming light is diffracted into its spectrum which a MEMS mirror reflects onto the output collimator. By modifying the mirror’s tilt angle, the user can choose the wavelength of the filter.

Definition
Fiber optic filters transmit or block (reject) specific wavelengths of light as they travel through an optical fiber. Filters using single mode (SM), multi mode (MM) or polarization maintaining (PM) fibers are available.
Standard fixed filters are often made of a single Fabry Perot type cavity (two reflectors separated by a fixed spacer of some thickness), resulting in a smooth, rounded transmission spectrum. Stacking multiple cavities together leads to flat top bandpass filters – with more cavities increasing the roll-off slope and thus improving the out-of-band rejection level.
Tunable filters often utilize a rotating stage that allows for manual adjustment of the angle of incidence between the filter and the incident beam, thus controlling the wavelength at which the filter transmits. This rotation can be performed manually or driven by a motor which in turn is controlled through an electric interface.
Combining two independently controllable rotating stages into one component leads to variable bandwidth tunable filters. The two filter elements are tuned to cover slightly different wavelength ranges, and the overlap of the two individual passbands defines the overall passband (filter width). With each filter being tunable over a range of wavelengths the user can control the center frequency as well as the width of the passband.
Another type of tunable filters is based on MEMS mirrors that vary their tilt angles when a voltage is applied. Within these filters, incoming light is diffracted (e.g. by a fused silica grating), and the MEMS mirror then reflects only the part of the spectrum into the output collimator (and thus into the output fiber) that corresponds to its momentary tilt angle.
