3SAE Technologies’ CMS Combiner Manufacturing System is the supplier’s latest and most advanced optical fiber splicing/processing system. The CMS is specifically designed to maintain production level repeatability for multi-kilowatt class high-power fiber combiners and other fused optical components.

The CMS system operates in partial vacuum and is utilizing the unique “Thermally Stabilized Plasma™” technology which generates an extremely repeatable and stabilized heat source with a wide dynamic range of operation from <300 °C to >3000 °C. This makes the CMS ideal for repeatable glass processing and high-volume optical component manufacturing.

Large diameter (LD) optical fibers are increasingly important in the development of new optical technologies. Cleaving these fibers presents many challenges, more so as the fiber diameter increases. Low angle offsets and smooth, flat end faces are required. Many fibers are non-round or have internal structures that interfere with conventional cleaving. With some fibers priced in hundreds of euros per meter, the length of cutoff scrap must be minimized. 3SAE Technologies’ EPS II End Face Preparation Station meets these challenges with a novel, polishing-based design that now features both flat and angle polishing. The results are consistent, even for shaped fibers. The end faces are flat and highly polished. EPS II is not an adapted connector polisher – it is a purpose-built large diameter (LD) optical fiber preparation unit optimized for splicing and other large diameter fiber termination applications. Choose from a selection of standard programs, or create and store a custom program for a specific fiber. Selectable programs ensure repeatable performance and the bright, clear LCD screen guides the user with the correct action for each step. No special skill or “touch” is required –the EPS II’s precision fixturing holds the fibers precisely, and the automated system lowers the fibers smoothly onto the adjustable-speed polishing plate. A filtered-air final cleaning/drying system is used to dry the fiber after cleaning in the included 3SAE Technologies Ultrasonic Cleaner, a purpose-built ultrasonic fiber cleaner that was designed specifically for fiber applications. Many years of splicing experience went into the functional, ergonomic design that ensures consistent cleaning results. When the preparation process is complete, the fiber end faces are flat, low-angle and ready for splicing. Less than 2 mm of scrap length means less wasted expensive fiber and allows more accurate placement of splices and components. This compact, precision-built instrument allows to perform fiber operations that are beyond the ordinary. Standard thermo-mechanical stripping, solvent cleaning and arc fusion splicing technologies are now over 20 years old and were developed for basic acrylic-coated 125 μm single mode (SM) optical fiber splicing. As fiber technology continues to expand, there are production operations that are difficult or impossible to perform on standard production fiber processing tools. 3SAE Technologies’ PWS Plasma Work Station utilizes the supplier’s patented 3-phase plasma technology to produce a “Ring of Fire®” surrounding the fiber with uniform heat and controlled ionic conditions. Sophisticated software and instrument-grade measurement technology monitors the 3-phase arc to maintain balance and consistency over a broad dynamic range. Temperatures obtainable at the fiber range from less than 100 to well over 3,000 °C. Many of the operations possible on the PWS Plasma Work Station can be performed in partial vacuum. The PWS system creates vacuum internally from an external air supply. The unique seal and baffle design allows for sufficient sealing around the fibers without causing fiber coating damage. The housing of the PWS is machined from a solid block of aluminum. The electronic and mechanical parts are designed for continuous-duty operation and long-term reliability even with heavy production use. Tough polyimide, carbon or gold coatings are difficult to remove without severely degrading the fiber’s mechanical integrity. Previous polyimide stripping technologies have either used thermal decomposition, which produces relatively low tensile strength (~100 kpsi), or strong acid/alkali chemistry, which is hazardous and produces toxic waste. The PWS Plasma Work Station uses ion etching technology to remove polyimide, carbon and gold plating safely and cleanly from the fiber.
