Fiber Type Large Diameter (LD); Fiber Cladding 400-2,000 µm; Non-angle or Angle Polishing <0.30-15° Typ.; Cycle Time 1-3 min; Scrap Fiber Waste <2 mm Typ. Large diameter (LD) optical fibers are increasingly important in the development of new optical technologies. Cleaving these fibers presents many challenges, more so as the fiber diameter increases. Low angle offsets and smooth, flat end faces are required. Many fibers are non-round or have internal structures that interfere with conventional cleaving. With some fibers priced in hundreds of euros per meter, the length of cutoff scrap must be minimized. 3SAE Technologies’ EPS II End Face Preparation Station meets these challenges with a novel, polishing-based design that now features both flat and angle polishing. The results are consistent, even for shaped fibers. The end faces are flat and highly polished. EPS II is not an adapted connector polisher – it is a purpose-built large diameter (LD) optical fiber preparation unit optimized for splicing and other large diameter fiber termination applications. Choose from a selection of standard programs, or create and store a custom program for a specific fiber. Selectable programs ensure repeatable performance and the bright, clear LCD screen guides the user with the correct action for each step. No special skill or “touch” is required –the EPS II’s precision fixturing holds the fibers precisely, and the automated system lowers the fibers smoothly onto the adjustable-speed polishing plate. A filtered-air final cleaning/drying system is used to dry the fiber after cleaning in the included 3SAE Technologies Ultrasonic Cleaner, a purpose-built ultrasonic fiber cleaner that was designed specifically for fiber applications. Many years of splicing experience went into the functional, ergonomic design that ensures consistent cleaning results. When the preparation process is complete, the fiber end faces are flat, low-angle and ready for splicing. Less than 2 mm of scrap length means less wasted expensive fiber and allows more accurate placement of splices and components. Key Features: Angled Polishing Capabilities High First-pass Yield Lowest Available Cleave Angles: <0.30° Typical Scrap Fiber Waste: <2 mm Typical Fiber Cladding: 400 to 2,000 µm Angle Cleaving: Up to 15° of Rotation (From Vertical) Cycle Time: 1 to 3 min Per Fiber Typical Easy Handling, No Additional Fiber Handling System Required Operator Independent No PC Required Power Supply: 24 VDC External Dimensions: 299.7 x 292 x 223.5 mm Compressed Air: Max 95 psi, 0.6 SCMF Applications: Splicing of Large Diameter (LD) Fibers up to 2,000 µm Fiber Cladding; Other Large Diameter (LD) Fiber Termination Applications

The FPU II window or end face stripping unit features 3SAE Technologies’ patented “Ring of Fire®” technology which surrounds the fiber with a uniform heat in controlled ionic conditions. This patented low temperature arc plasma process will window or end face strip polyimide and carbon coated fibers quickly and cleanly without use of any mechanical blades, acid or any other chemicals. The automated process provides consistent stripping results without requiring any special operator skills. The FPU II system is adaptable to your process and can accommodate fiber holders from the most common fusion splicer manufacturers. Strip lengths are adjustable and easily programmable. Tough polyimide or carbon coatings are difficult to remove without severely degrading the fiber’s mechanical integrity. Other polyimide stripping technologies use mechanical blades or rapid thermal decomposition, which produces low tensile strength while leaving the fiber dirty. A more commonly used method, strong acid/alkali chemistry, is hazardous and produces toxic waste. Utilizing 3SAE Technologies’ patented Ring of Fire® pulsed plasma etching technology, the FPU II window or end face stripping unit removes polyimide and carbon coatings safely and cleanly. The standard FPU II system accommodates a single fiber up to 1,000 μm diameter, with appropriate fixtures. The FPU II’s control interface is accessed via the mounted LCD and keypad. This interface provides operational status updates and provides the operator with advanced control of plasma characteristics, temperature and positioning. The operator can quickly and easily recall and store parameters in any one of up to eight available recipe locations. This allows quick translations between fiber stripping programs. Fiber Size 125-1,000 µm; Circular & Shaped Fiber; Non-angle Cleaving or Angle Cleaving With Fiber Rotation up to 30°; Fiber Holder 16 or 18 mm; Up to 10 Programs 3SAE Technologies’ Liquid Clamp Cleaver II LDF, LCC II is the most advanced large diameter fiber cleaver for circular and shaped fibers from 125 to 1,000 µm. It is available in two different models, the Liquid Clamp Cleaver II-S (LCC II-S) and Liquid Clamp Cleaver II-A (LCC II-A). The LCC II-S is designed for standard, non-angle cleaving, while the LCC II-A features angle cleaving with rotation up to 30°. The primary cause of bad cleave angles is torsional strain in the fiber, induced by torque from conventional clamps. This patented process features a completely torque-free clamping system, which uses a proprietary metal alloy ingot that melts at less than the boiling point of water. This lead-free, cadmium-free alloy ingot is specially formulated to solidify tightly around the optical fiber when cooled, providing torque-free clamping even of non-round fibers such as octagonal shape. A solid-state temperature control system rapidly liquifies and solidifies the alloy as needed. When the alloy ingot is depleted by use, it can be easily replaced. These unique alloy ingots are available exclusively from 3SAE Technologies. Both the LCC II-A and LCC II-S can optionally leverage an integrated manual backstop within the cleaver housing that provides enhanced cleave performance for structured fibers. Alignment of the blade, backstop, and fiber is achieved via the integrated side angle view vision system (requires PC connection). This perspective allows the user to easily verify the proper backstop and blade positioning for various fiber diameters prior to cleaving. The Liquid Clamp Cleaver LDF, LCC II large diameter fiber cleaver has an on-board LCD that provides continuous status updates and instructs the operator in the proper loading and cleaving sequence. The menu system enables the operator to easily create, modify and use up to ten cleaving programs, allowing efficient transitions between different fiber diameters. Fiber Stripper/Cleaner; Chemical-free; Strip Length 2-55 mm; Fiber Coating Diameter ≤1,000 µm; Translation Speed 0.002-20 mm/s; Fiber Type: Polyimide, Carbon, Gold Coated 3SAE Technologies’ PWS Plasma Work Station is a unique fiber stripper/cleaner for polyimide, carbon and gold coated fibers. This compact, precision-built instrument allows to perform fiber operations that are beyond the ordinary. Standard thermo-mechanical stripping, solvent cleaning and arc fusion splicing technologies are now over 20 years old and were developed for basic acrylic-coated 125 μm single mode (SM) optical fiber splicing. As fiber technology continues to expand, there are production operations that are difficult or impossible to perform on standard production fiber processing tools. 3SAE Technologies’ PWS Plasma Work Station utilizes the supplier’s patented 3-phase plasma technology to produce a “Ring of Fire®” surrounding the fiber with uniform heat and controlled ionic conditions. Sophisticated software and instrument-grade measurement technology monitors the 3-phase arc to maintain balance and consistency over a broad dynamic range. Temperatures obtainable at the fiber range from less than 100 to well over 3,000 °C. Many of the operations possible on the PWS Plasma Work Station can be performed in partial vacuum. The PWS system creates vacuum internally from an external air supply. The unique seal and baffle design allows for sufficient sealing around the fibers without causing fiber coating damage. The housing of the PWS is machined from a solid block of aluminum. The electronic and mechanical parts are designed for continuous-duty operation and long-term reliability even with heavy production use. Tough polyimide, carbon or gold coatings are difficult to remove without severely degrading the fiber’s mechanical integrity. Previous polyimide stripping technologies have either used thermal decomposition, which produces relatively low tensile strength (~100 kpsi), or strong acid/alkali chemistry, which is hazardous and produces toxic waste. The PWS Plasma Work Station uses ion etching technology to remove polyimide, carbon and gold plating safely and cleanly from the fiber. The stripped region has cleanly tapered interfaces with no charring, and the resulting tensile strength is many times higher (often times >400 kpsi) than conventional stripping methods. The standard PWS system accommodates a single fiber up to 1,000 μm diameter, with appropriate fixtures. With the available multiple-fiber option, two standard size fibers (125 μm cladding) can be processed simultaneously. The PWS’s control interface is accessed via the mounted LCD and Keypad. This interface provides operational status updates and provides the operator with complete control of plasma characteristics, temperature and positioning. The operator can quickly and easily recall and store parameters in any one of up to 10 available recipe locations. This allows quick translations between fiber processes. The 3SAE Technologies team have almost a century of combined experience in the manufacturing and support of custom fiber optic tools. On-site CNC machining and electronic assembly capability enables 3SAE Technologies to act quickly to create customized programming, interfaces and fixtures to meet unique customer requirements. Contact the AMS Technologies fiber optic tools experts to discuss your customized Plasma Work Station exactly tailored to your project’s requirements. The TMS operates in partial vacuum (advantageous in producing adiabatic fiber tapers) and is utilizing the patent pending “Thermally Stabilized Plasma™” technology, which generates a wide and extremely stabilized heat source with a wide dynamic range of operation from <300 to >3000 °C. This allows the width of the plasma field to expand up to 10x along the axis of the fiber. While narrow profiles create modulations and stress concentrations that induce losses, heat sources with a wider heat profile are better for tapering and bundling of fibers because the pull distance per unit time is distributed over the molten region in accordance with the profile. The TMS system’s wider plasma field flattens and reduces the frequency of modulations in a taper, resulting in ultra-low losses <1%. Operating in partial vacuum also minimizes oxidation of the electrodes during the tapering process, resulting in virtually debris free tapers. 3SAE Technologies’ blunt electrode design increases life expectancy by >10x while increasing throughput power capabilities for high-power laser systems. High-power testing confirms that TMS does not contaminate the glass surface, eliminating the need for etching and reducing the cost of production and rework. Three customizable tapering modes are available: single direction, bi-directional and table-based tapering. Table-based tapering allows the flexibility of a syntax-based software program to create a custom taper program while using a simplified LabVIEW-based GUI. Alternately, programs such as "MATLAB" or Microsoft Excel can be utilized to develop the tapering program.
