Diffuse reflectance targets and standards are available from AMS Technologies with reflectance values of 2% to 99% over wavelength spectra as wide as 250 nm to 2500 nm. Reflective areas range from 31.75 mm diameter all the way up to 1.2 m x 2.4 m.
Maintaining constant contrast over a wide range of lighting conditions, our series of diffuse reflectance targets is ideal for laboratory, production and field applications that require long exposure to harsh environmental conditions. These targets are available in white or gray plates up to 610 x 610 mm, mounted in an aluminium frame.
Uniform spectral response and consistent appearance within varying lighting environments are main characteristics of our greyscale reference reflectance targets, available as rectangular boards (0.5 x 0.5 to 1.2 x 2.4 m) in grey or white, and used to characterize the performance of e.g. spectral imaging and Lidar sensing systems. These targets’ material shows no gloss, no polarization, and no fluorescence, is thermally and physically durable, thermally color stable, and UV light stable.
Our durable, chemically inert, diffuse reflectance standards are spectrally flat over the UV-VIS-NIR spectrum using a reflectance material which is the most Lambertian reflector available for use over this wavelength range. Housed in a durable delrin holder with a protective cover, these reflectance standards are available individually and in sets of four or eight standards.
Custom targets of various reflectance values and/or in larger dimensions up to 3 x 3 m can be constructed and calibrated – contact the AMS Technologies experts to discuss your customized diffuse reflectance target or standard solution!

Complementing our reflectance targets, AMS Technologies offers a broad portfolio of integrating spheres for creating diffuse light radiation or collecting strongly divergent radiation. General-purpose integrating spheres are available with diameters from 2.5 cm up to 1.5 m, 3 or 4 ports and a choice of reflectance materials or coatings – also as ready-to-use starter kits packaged with the most common accessories.
Both our reflectance targets and integrating spheres can be used with our selection of broadband, ASE and supercontinuum light sources, including full-spectrum LED sources, full-range halogen/deuterium light sources, LED/SLED broadband light sources, and many more.
In addition to integrating spheres and reflectance targets, we carry a broad portfolio of further optical test and measurement solutions: our beam profilers allow for beam analysis, beam position detection and control, and the precise alignment of the beam to a target point. Our extensive range of spectroscopic instruments includes spectrometers, spectrographs and spectroscopy cameras. Our interferometers are important tools for quality control. We carry interferometers for measuring fiber holders, single- and multi-fiber connectors, but also systems for other applications like a fiber-pigtailed Mach-Zehnder free space interferometer or Michelson and Mach-Zehnder fiber interferometers.
A broad portfolio of further devices for inspection, test and measurement of optical connectors is available like an extensive range of fiber optic microscopes for every application and budget, tools and systems for measuring passive optics and connectors, as well as other fiber properties measurement devices like fiber analysers, tensile testers, or refractive index measurement services.
Equipment like light sources, optical power meters or OTDRs allow tests of optical fibers or patch cables in the laboratory as well as in the field.
Tools for fiber optics processing, dispensing and curing of optical adhesives and cleaning of optical connector surfaces round off the AMS Technologies range of solutions around optical test, tools and measurement.
Definition
Diffuse reflectance targets and standards are designed to be as close as possible to “Lambertian reflectance”, a property defining an ideal "matte" or diffusely reflecting surface. To an observer, a Lambertian surface’s brightness appears to be the same regardless of the viewing angle. The Lambertian surface (named after Johann Heinrich Lambert) yields isotropic luminance, while the luminous intensity obeys Lambert's cosine law.
Applications: Reflectance targets are useful as field calibration targets for processing reflectance images derived from multi- or hyperspectral cameras. If a camera does not have an automatic color correction function (white balance), reflectance standards enable true color reproduction under different lighting conditions by performing the color balance manually. Reflectance targets are used to test and calibrate remote sensing instruments, spectrophotometers, spectroradiometers and image sensors in autonomous vehicle technology – perfect for testing time-of-flight instrumentation (LIDAR systems) – and they are also suitable for determining light levels and uniform illumination in imaging systems.
